History

In World War II, a training facility by the name of Camp Abbot was built for the soul purpose of training combat engineers in a simulated combat environment. By June 1944, the camp was abandoned and most of the settlement razed. This land was bought by two developers named John Gray and Donald V. McCallum in the 1960’s and was named Sunriver. The name Sunriver was chosen by these developers and the Officers Mess from the original Camp Abbot was preserved and renovated into the Great Hall under the management of Sunriver Resort. In 1968, a number of condominiums were built in conjunction with the completion of Sunriver Lodge and in 1969 the master plan was completed and developers began selling lots. The Sunriver Parks and Recreation Department is home to a variety of activities, programs, and facilities that are dedicated to improving the quality of life of all of Sunriver’s visitors and residents alike.
